Production planning

What shapes a video production scope?

A useful estimate starts with decisions, not an invented package price. Use this guide to compare proposals on the same basis.

Scope drivers

The choices behind the estimate.

Message & treatment

One interview, a scripted campaign and an animated explanation have different preparation and production needs. Approve the job of the film before deciding its length.

Production & access

People, locations, travel, safety requirements, permissions, art direction and product availability shape shoot feasibility. Confirm who provides each input.

Versions & localisation

Count master films, cutdowns, aspect ratios, caption files, voiceovers and languages. A new language may also change graphics, timing and local review.

Rights & handover

Agree media, territory and duration for talent, music and archive footage. List master files, source files and storage responsibilities rather than assuming all rights are unlimited.

Compare like for like

Ask these questions before approving a quote.

  • What is the audience, purpose and primary deliverable?
  • Which script, storyboard and edit approvals are included?
  • How many revision rounds are allowed at each stage?
  • What changes require a revised estimate?
  • Which locations, travel, talent, music and usage rights are included?
  • Which languages, aspect ratios, captions and export files are included?
  • What inputs must the client supply, and by when?
  • Who owns final approval, source files and maintenance?

Media buying, translation, location costs, talent extensions, reshoots and additional edits should be named separately when they are outside the scope. A delivery date depends on access, inputs and review speed as well as production effort.

Format decision

Choose the clearest explanation.

Choose the approach that provides the clearest evidence for your audience.

Live action builds human and physical context. Animation simplifies concepts. UI capture demonstrates real product steps. A hybrid can combine these strengths.
